The club is certainly making history on-and-off the pitch this season. Firstly, the supporters save and takeover the running of the club in the Summer. Secondly, it becomes a Pathway Club and thirdly, it reinforces its commitment as a Community Club by setting up two teams for the Ability Counts League run by the Bedfordshire FA.
Of particular significance is that Bradley Field is the captain of one of the teams. Bradley, is a student at Weatherfield Academy. He is a devoted Manchester United fan, loves to attend matches at Creasey Park and has dreamed of representing Dunstable Town for many years.
In fact, it was whilst talking to Bradley at one of our home matches last season that set a chain of events in place that led to the setting up of our Ability Counts teams. Bradley mentioned his family had a connection with the club that went back many years but was not sure what it was.
Following conversations with Bradley’s parents and grandparents, we soon discovered aspects of the missing history of the club. It transpires that Bradley’s Great-Great Grandfather, George Field played for Dunstable in the late 1800s. George worked in the Iron Foundry in Dunstable and was a founder member and steward of the Victoria Club in Victoria Street.
George’s son, Frederick George William Field carried on the family tradition of representing the club as he played for the youth team in the 1920s and then progressed to the first team in the 1930s, when he also captained the team. The onset of the Second World War curtailed his playing career and whilst a Sergeant in the Royal Artillery, he sustained injuries that would not only prematurely end his participation in the conflict but also his playing career. Undaunted, at the end of the war, Frederick set up a local family building business – F & B Field, that is still operating to this day.
Football and representing Dunstable Town, skipped a few generations in the Field family but Bradley has picked up the mantle once more for the family and the club. Bradley is an inspirational captain and wonderful club ambassador who truly embodies the Corinthian spirit of playing this most wonderful game.
