As part of the club’s ongoing work with Totternhoe Lower School, John McLoughlin, the Chairman, recently paid a visit to the school to address all the students and staff at assembly and give a talk to the Year 4 students. John decided to turn the assembly into a celebration of both the school and the partnership it has formed with the club. To this end, John presented Debbie Mitchelmore, the Assistant Headteacher, with a trophy to celebrate the school being the Community School of the Season and then with a medal in recognition of all the work Debbie has done to help the club develop its community education project. There then followed the presentation of flowers to Debbie and Shannon Murray, to recognise their recent Teacher of the Year and Apprentice of the Year Awards respectively at a recent awards ceremony, where the club also received an award for the work it does in the community.
John then had a great session with the Year 4 students where he talked about his involvement in football from having a professional contract with Wimbledon to working with Dunstable Town and taking on various roles over the years, culminating in running the club. He stressed the importance to the club of involving young people, in terms of encouraging them to support their local club and play for the various youth teams, where it is about participation and not skill level.
There then followed a question and answer session, where the students learnt more about the club; told John how much they enjoyed coming to matches and the great fun they had when Gedeon Okita ran a training session.
The session ended up with John giving the students two homework tasks. One was for those that play FIFA, for each of them to play as Dunstable Town FC! The second was for each of the Year 4 students to create their own Dunstable Town match-day programme, with the best one to be printed and distributed to all students at the school. We look forward to announcing the winner of the match-day programme project.
