Former England international goalkeeper David James watched on last night as Dunstable were beaten 5-0 by National League side, Dagenham & Redbridge, but he was seemingly captivated by the home side’s performance.

A strong Daggers side played at Creasey Park, under the watchful eye of manager John Still, who is good friends with James, having worked together in the goalkeeper’s early footballing days.

Although Dunstable were dominated for most of the game, there were moments which gave the Blues a glimmer of hope for the coming season.

David James said: “I was impressed with Dunstable’s display, I saw a lot of good performances.

“I know there is a lot of trialists for Dunstable, but if you can keep that team together, the determination, drive and enthusiasm, there is no reason Dunstable can’t go on to have a good season.”

Last season in the Southern Premier Division, Dunstable were within touching distance of the play-off places, but the loss of players to clubs in higher divisions led to a dip in form, with the Creasey Park outfit eventually finishing in mid-table.

James said that it is important to stay focused throughout the season, even when the end of the season is in sight.

The former Liverpool, Aston Villa and Portsmouth keeper said: “It’s about dedication, you can do all the training in the world, but if you don’t look after yourself in between games then that’s going to affect you.

“At every level, a season is a long time and it is very easy to get side tracked, even looking at your holiday in three months time can take your eye off the ball, excuse the pun!

“I know at this level with players coming in and out it is difficult to maintain a consistent side throughout the season, but I am into grassroots football, so I wish Dunstable Town all the best and look forward to seeing some of these players doing well this season.”

Dunstable travel to Arlesey Town FC this Saturday for their fourth game of pre-season, with the match kicking off at 3pm.
