MATCH REPORT: REDDITCH UTD 1-0 DUNSTABLE TOWN

DEFENSIVE ERROR SURRENDERS THE POINTS TO REDDITCH

Chances had been few and far between until Danico Johnson netted 17 minutes from time, but the goal prompted Redditch into playing their best football of the game.

A weak Apostocopoulos shot after eight minutes was the best chance of a dismal opening half, although Liam Spink and Johnson also had efforts which failed to test Jack Smith in the Dunstable goal. Redditch were not averse to the long ball tactic, often sweeping there ball out to the wings, often to Nat Kelly and Reece Hewitt.

Dunstable waited until the early stages of the second half to have their first shot, a powerful effort over the target from Danny Green. David Keenleyside followed this with another effort that was deflected behind for a corner but, apart from a half chance later in the game from striker Alex Cathline, that was as close as the visitors were to get to forcing a save from Reds keeper Brad Catlow.

It looked as though the home side were to be just as shy in front of goal particularly after Spink miscued an effort wide of the target from 12 yards after some decent work from Johnson and Eli Bako.

But the game turned on 73 minutes when a long ball forward from Reece Hewitt sent Johnson charging towards goal with the ball, instead of being properly cleared, fell opportunely before placing his shot beyond the Dunstable keeper.

A minute later and it could have been 2-0 when Apostocopoulos won the ball on the left hand side of the area only to have his shot blocked by keeper Smith’s legs.

Overall, it was a good, disciplined performance and the referee was impressed with the Blues discipline and attitude. Importantly it had been a decent game of football characterised by honest endeavour and free of cautions and finger- wagging reprimands.
